Three Gentle Ways to Support Yourself in Mid-Winter

Let's be honest, mid-winter can feel a bit… heavy, can't it! And it's a strange one, because chances are you saw everything about Imbolc last week, or perhaps you've seen the social media posts sharing that we are over the darkest times. But, the days are short, and the mornings are still dark, so getting out from under a warm blanket can feel like a genuine achievement. At this time of year, our natural energy tends to dip, along with oyr motivation, and everything seems to move at a slightly slower pace.
But, that’s kind of the point.
Mid-winter isn’t meant to feel the same as summer. Yes, things are starting to show small signs of life, but let's not forget that it’s still a season that asks us to soften, slow down and take a little more care — even when life around us keeps moving.
So here's three gentle ways to help you approach mid-winter in a way that allows you to feel like you're embracing it, without trying to “fix” it.

1. Let yourself move a little slower
If things feel slower right now, you’re not doing anything wrong.
This time naturally invites a gentler pace, perhaps that looks like earlier nights, quieter mornings, less pushing. Instead of fighting it, see what happens when you lean into it.
That might mean choosing slower movement, taking breaks when you need them, or simply doing a little less where you can. Slowing down isn’t falling behind. It’s responding to the season you’re in.
2. Focus on nourishment, not perfection
Winter nourishment doesn’t need to be complicated.
It’s warm drinks, comforting food, layers, softer lighting, deeper breaths. It’s also how you speak to yourself when energy is low, or when you don’t get everything done.
Nourishment is about asking, “What would feel supportive right now?” — and letting the answer be simple.
3. Move and spend time with others in ways that feel good
Movement (at any time, let alone the depths of winter) doesn’t need to be intense to be effective.
Gentle Pilates, yoga or mindful movement can help you feel more connected to your body without draining what energy you have. It’s about moving with your body, not against it.
And while winter can feel quiet and inward, connection still matters. Sharing space with others — moving, chatting, laughing — can be just as nourishing as rest.
So a gentle reminder this season:
You don’t need to rush right now.
You don’t need to be more motivated.
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
This time is allowed to be slower.
You’re allowed to meet it where you are.
